Love and Astrology
Love, and the affairs of the heart we explore from the 5th house, Marriage from the 7th house – to be examined from both the Lagna and Chandra Lagna – and in some cases from Venus as the lagna. The 5th house in the “natural” zodiac rules over the physical heart, the “pitter pat” or the increase of beating when we find ourselves physically attracted to another person. Sun, the natural ruler of the 5th sign Leo represents the soul, or the atman. The King, who wants a kingdom, -- so he seeks out a partner to love in order to create that kingdom. The 4th house, who rules over the domains of nurturing and emotional comfort – represents the heart chakra, or the metaphysical heart – the aspect of the “heart” that feels expansion when we are overwhelmed by emotions. When our emotions reach out, and we feel our chests expand with warmth and emotional feeling for another person. Or, when we feel overwhelmed with emotion -- when we view a wonderful vista, a sunset, or our child or football team winning in competition! That is the heart chakra and it is located in the center of your chest – where you point to yourself when you say “I am” and state your own name. The physical heart of course, is located just to your left side of your chest. The Moon, the natural 4th house ruler -- who has domain over our mind and the desires of our mind represents the emotional aspect of our mind – and thoughts that make our heart expand when we think about our love(s). Romantic love, or love for family, even love for our spiritual advisors, teachers and gurus – all belong to the realm of the 4th house and the Moon. Mercury rules over the intellectual aspect of the mind. Mercury, with his winged feet – speeds into action to manifest the desires of the mind. Moon (mind) says, I want love in my life. Mercury (intellect) says, “How am I going to manifest love in my life, to satisfy the desires of the Moon (mind). Then, Mercury sets about to make a plan, create a list of what must be done. Work on improving the self, take a workshop on relationships, decide the qualities we want in a partner for copasetic happiness, join an online dating service, join a church or temple. Then have a compatibility study done to learn if the chosen partner (by the Mind’s desire) is a logical choice for long term happiness. This brings us to Mars, the planet of passion, ambition, drive and manifestation. Mars starts the ignition. Venus, the planet ruling over love, beauty, and refinement -- is the car. (Venus incidentally is the karaka or signifying planet representing vehicles). Mars and Venus basically signify Passion and Love. Chemical love. The physical chemistry of two connecting. If a woman’s Mars aspects a man’s Venus it will cause him to be attracted to her, and vice versa. We will take for example, the poles of a magnet. Let’s say that Mars rules the South direction and Venus rules the North. (For purposes of this explanation, Mars actually does rule over the South direction, however Venus rules over Northeast.) We all know that the opposite poles attract; south and north cling to each other. And, everyone has experienced the repelling of the same pole alignment. North and North, South and South – identical, yet when put in closer proximity they begin to repel, pushing each other away. So a Mars connection to another’s Venus brings attraction. Mars to Mars or Venus to Venus manifests more as ‘brotherly” or “sisterly” love. Where both will be passionate about the same things or both will “love” similar things. Venus in Sanskrit means semen – or the procreative fluid in both sexes that work together to manifest a new physical form. Jupiter represents marriage, and the husband. It is the natural 9th house lord. Ninth house rules father, guru, preceptor or advisor. Jupiter of course, rules over the natural 12th house as well. The 12th house, often called “the house of the couch,” refers to the bed. The first two nakshatras of Pisces, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada represent a “cot”. Shakti, the energy or kundalini expression in connecting belongs to the domain of the 8th house (naturally ruled by Mars and the sign Scorpio), as do the physical reproductive organs, internal and external. Saturn brings stability, structure and endurance to a relationship. Saturn also brings us our life lessons. (It resides by transit in a sign for 2 and ½ years – compared to the Moon who moves through a sign in 3 days and a nakshatra in 1 day!) Often we recommend marriage to someone within a couple of years of your own age. One reason, beyond the obvious one of shared life experiences at similar ages, is that likely, in many cases the couple will share the same Saturn by sign placement. They will be working on similar life lessons that produces more harmony. And now we think about the actual houses in which these planets reside, and how that changes the picture in connection. Say one individual has Saturn in the 1st house or ascendant. They will be working on the Self, intensely setting about to solve the dilemmas of identity determining how to improve the Self. Perhaps learning about the Self by experiencing certain illnesses they must overcome. (The first house rules the body as a whole, and Saturn, who restricts, can bring illness and physical complaints. And the other person has Saturn in their 7th house. That person will set out to “perfect” their partner – which can bring disharmony – but when they begin to perfect their own self (Saturn aspects the ascendant by opposition from house 7) then harmony between the two can occur.
